Inatoa is a Swahili word meaning it offers or it produces. For us, INATOA stands for Inspiring Natural Advances and Technology for Organic Agriculture. We believe that small steps make the biggest difference.
An estimated 50 to 60% of fruits harvested in Tanzania is wasted each year through transportation or rot while waiting to be sold, while an alarming 65% of children under five live with iron deficiency. The simple process of food drying is an excellent way to preserve food for year-round consumption - a solar food dryer can increase the profitability of a farm and significantly improve the health of the community.
The INATOA Project (Inspiring Natural Advancements and Technology for Organic Agriculture) will work at two rural farms and a children's center in Moshi to support organic farming and construct a solar dryer for each site. The project volunteers, Kim and Jamie, will train the farmers how to implement solar drying techniques, raise awareness among the community on the benefits of micro-nutrition, and work with a local women’s business group to discuss market access for food dryers.
Although it will just be the two of us doing the direct work in Tanzania, we will be doing so on the generosity and goodwill of all of our supporters; in this way, this project is a global effort to increase understanding of hidden hunger. And to put a stop to it!
